# Set up scenes and light groups

**Control multiple devices with one tap: eleven steps to your first scene and first light group.**

With a scene, you can put multiple devices into a desired state with one tap, for example dimmed lights and fan off. A light group switches multiple lights together. This guide shows both using the example of the "Movie Night" scene and the "Living Area" light group.

## What you need

- For scenes: Revotion app 1.2.14 or newer and BRAIN firmware 2.4.0 or newer.
- A connection to the BRAIN.
- At least one device that can be switched. For a light group, at least one light.

| Limit | Value |
|---|---|
| Scenes stored by BRAIN | 10 |
| Devices per scene | 10 |
| Characters for the name | 20 |
| Tile sizes per scene | 3 |

## Step 1: Open scenes

Open the side menu using the three lines at the top left and tap **Scenes**.

The entry is in the "System" section, between "Automations" and "Weekly Schedule".

![Side menu of the Revotion app, the Scenes entry is highlighted](https://university.revotion.app/api/public/university/image/images/caa8da25-6a8f-4ad0-a09d-1b511cfd4c01/szenen-01-seitenmenue-v1.png)

*The "Scenes" entry in the side menu.*

## Step 2: Create a new scene

You see your scenes, each with the number of devices it controls.

Tap the **Plus** at the top right.

The **Brain Memory** bar shows how many scenes your BRAIN is already storing. When it reaches ten, the memory is full. The plus button will disappear until you delete a scene.

*The plus creates a new scene.*

## Step 3: Choose symbol and name

In the editor, you set how the scene is named and what it looks like.

- ① **Symbol:** Choose one of twelve symbols. It will appear on the tile later.
- ② **Name:** Give the scene a name with up to 20 characters, for example "Movie Night".
- ③ **Add Capability:** Opens the list of devices you can add to the scene.

![Scene editor with symbol selection, name Movie Night, and the Add Capability button, numbered 1 to 3](https://university.revotion.app/api/public/university/image/images/caa8da25-6a8f-4ad0-a09d-1b511cfd4c01/szenen-03-symbol-name-v1.png)

*Symbol ①, name ②, and devices ③.*

## Step 4: Select device

The list shows all devices that the BRAIN can control in a scene, separated by lights and devices.

Under each device, you can see what can be adjusted: "On/Off only" or "On/Off + 2 values".

Tap the device, in the example **Ambient Living Room**.

*All devices that a scene can control.*

## Step 5: Set state and light mood

First, choose under **State** whether the scene turns the device on or off. Each device in a scene needs a state.

For a light with color and brightness, you also set the light mood:

- ① **Last used state** turns the light on as it was last used. **Fixed mood** sets the same values every time.
- ② **Color:** Activate the dot and choose the color on the ring.
- ③ **Brightness:** Activate the dot and set the value with the arrows, in the example 50%.
- What you don't set, the device keeps. Tap **Save**.

![Settings for Ambient Living Room: Fixed mood selected, color and brightness 50 percent activated, numbered 1 to 3](https://university.revotion.app/api/public/university/image/images/caa8da25-6a8f-4ad0-a09d-1b511cfd4c01/szenen-05-lichtstimmung-v1.png)

*Fixed mood ①, color ②, and brightness ③.*

## Step 6: Add more devices and save

The device now appears under **Members**, along with the state the scene creates.

Use **Add Capability** to add more devices, up to ten per scene. In the example, the scene also turns off the roof fan.

The X removes a device from the scene again.

Tap **Save**. The scene is now in the BRAIN and appears in the list.

*Two devices, then save.*

## Step 7: Place scene on the home screen

To start the scene with one tap, you place it as a tile on the home screen.

Open the side menu, tap **Add Widget** and select the **Scenes** category.

![New Widgets selection with categories Devices, Lights, Temperature, Energy, Fill Levels, Maps, Instruments, Note, and Scenes; Scenes is highlighted](https://university.revotion.app/api/public/university/image/images/caa8da25-6a8f-4ad0-a09d-1b511cfd4c01/szenen-07-widget-kategorie-v1.png)

*The "Scenes" category in the widget selection.*

## Step 8: Select tile

Each scene is available in three sizes: small, wide, and tall.

Tap the desired tile. It will be placed at the end of your home screen.

The window stays open so you can add more tiles right away. Close it when you're done.

![Tile selection Scenes, the wide Movie Night tile is highlighted](https://university.revotion.app/api/public/university/image/images/caa8da25-6a8f-4ad0-a09d-1b511cfd4c01/szenen-08-kachel-wahl-v1.png)

*Each scene comes in three sizes.*

## Step 9: Start scene

The tile shows the symbol and name of the scene.

- ① **Start:** Tap the **Symbol**. It lights up as long as the scene is active. Another tap on the symbol turns it off again.
- **Edit:** A tap on the name or the empty area of the tile opens the scene in the editor.
- ② The tile below is a **Light group**. The next two steps show you how to create it.

![Home screen with the scene tile Movie Night and the light group Living Area, both switched on, numbered 1 and 2](https://university.revotion.app/api/public/university/image/images/caa8da25-6a8f-4ad0-a09d-1b511cfd4c01/szenen-09-homescreen-v1.png)

*Scene ① and light group ② on the home screen.*

## Step 10: Create light group

A light group is a tile that switches multiple lights on and off together.

Open **Add Widget**, select the **Lights** category and tap the **All Lights** tile.

The new tile initially contains all the lights in your system.

![Lights category in the widget selection, the All Lights tile is highlighted](https://university.revotion.app/api/public/university/image/images/caa8da25-6a8f-4ad0-a09d-1b511cfd4c01/szenen-10-alle-lichter-v1.png)

*The "All Lights" tile is the light group.*

## Step 11: Select lights and name group

Tap the name of the tile on the home screen. Its settings open.

- ① **Name:** Tap the pencil, give the group its own name, for example "Living Area", and confirm with the checkmark.
- ② **Selection:** Tap each light that should not belong to the group. The dot disappears. At least one light must remain selected.
- Close the window. A tap on the large area of the tile now switches all lights in the group together.

![Settings of the light group Living Area with Ambient Living Room and Kitchen Light selected, Reading Light Bed deselected, numbered 1 and 2](https://university.revotion.app/api/public/university/image/images/caa8da25-6a8f-4ad0-a09d-1b511cfd4c01/szenen-11-lichtgruppe-v1.png)

*Name ① and selection of lights ②.*

## Scene or light group?

- **Scene:** Brings various devices into a defined state, for example light on at 50% and fan off. It is stored in the BRAIN and can also be used as an action in an automation.
- **Light group:** Switches multiple lights on and off together. It exists only as a tile on the home screen.

## Edit or delete a scene

- **Edit:** In the "Scenes" section, tap the scene or on the home screen tap the name of the tile. You can adjust the icon, name, devices, and states.
- **Delete:** At the bottom of the editor, there is **Delete scene**. If an automation uses the scene, the app will warn you first, because the automation will then run into nothing.

## Good to know

- Scenes are stored in the BRAIN and not just in the app. Pull the list down in the "Scenes" section to refresh it.
- In an automation, you select a scene via **Add action** and **Activate scene**.
- For awnings and windows, you choose the direction instead of on and off: Open or Close.
- Outputs that are set as buttons cannot be switched by a scene. A pulse does not maintain a state that the scene could establish.
- If the NODE configuration is protected in the settings, scenes can still be started but not edited.
- The info icon in the top right of the "Scenes" section starts a tour that explains the screen.
