# Level your vehicle

**Read the tilt, calibrate the BRAIN, and display the height compensation in centimeters.**

The BRAIN measures how tilted your vehicle is, lengthwise and sideways. Using track width and wheelbase, the app converts the angle to centimeters and tells you where to place wedges or ramps. This guide shows you the way using a van as an example.

## What you need

- Revotion app 1.2.14 or newer and BRAIN firmware 2.4.0 or newer for display in centimeters.
- A Bluetooth connection to the BRAIN. The app won't show tilt via REMOTE.
- A BRAIN with an inclination sensor. The BRAIN Lite doesn't have one and therefore won't show a tilt angle.
- "Camper" selected as the vehicle type. There is no height compensation for boats.
- A level parking spot for calibration and a measuring tape for track width and wheelbase.

| Specification | Value |
|---|---|
| Standstill for calibration | 10 s |
| Measurements: track width and wheelbase | 2 |
| Display increments | 1 cm |
| Tile variants | 5 |

## Step 1: The three menu items in the sidebar

Open the sidebar menu using the three lines at the top left. For leveling, you need three entries there:

- ① **Configuration:** Here you select the installation position of the BRAIN, calibrate, and read the compensation with instructions.
- ② **My Vehicle:** Here you enter the track width and wheelbase. Tap on your vehicle's image to do this.
- ③ **Add Widget:** Here you add the "Tilt Angle" tile to your home screen.

![Sidebar menu of the Revotion app, marked are Configuration, the vehicle image under My Vehicle, and Add Widget, numbered 1 to 3](https://university.revotion.app/api/public/university/image/images/0fd95729-ded2-4719-a13b-67a390b1a0a7/nivellierung-01-seitenmenue-v1.png)

*Configuration ①, My Vehicle ②, and Add Widget ③.*

## Step 2: Open tilt angle

Tap **Configuration** in the sidebar menu. You'll land in the "My REVOTION® Network" overview.

Under "System Settings," tap the **Tilt Angle** tile.

If the tile is missing, your BRAIN's firmware is too old or your BRAIN doesn't have an inclination sensor. You'll find how to update the firmware in the article [How do I update my Brain?](https://university.revotion.app/artikel/id/3zzxj52b)

![Overview My REVOTION Network with System Settings, the Tilt Angle tile is marked](https://university.revotion.app/api/public/university/image/images/0fd95729-ded2-4719-a13b-67a390b1a0a7/nivellierung-02-konfiguration-v1.png)

## Step 3: Select installation position

The BRAIN needs to know how it's positioned in the vehicle. Scroll in the dialog to the **Brain Position in Camper** section.

- ① **Selection:** Each row represents a surface: floor, ceiling, front wall, rear wall, left wall, or right wall. Tap the image in the matching row that's oriented the same way as your BRAIN.
- ② **Selected:** Your choice is shown here in plain text, in the example "Floor · Connector facing rear." Compare the sentence with the installation in your vehicle.

If the installation position is incorrect, the system will calculate the tilt incorrectly. The choice is transferred to the BRAIN as soon as you start calibration in the next step.

![Tilt Angle dialog with the selection of Brain Position in six rows and the Selected card, numbered 1 and 2](https://university.revotion.app/api/public/university/image/images/0fd95729-ded2-4719-a13b-67a390b1a0a7/nivellierung-03-einbaulage-v1.png)

*Select installation position ① and verify in plain text ②.*

## Step 4: Calibrate

Park your vehicle level before you calibrate. The BRAIN will remember this position as the zero position, and all future readings will be based on it.

- ① **Start calibration:** After that, keep the vehicle still for at least 10 seconds—don't get in and don't move anything. The app shows "Keep vehicle still…" It may take a bit longer.
- ② **Clear calibration:** Discards the zero position again. The app won't show any tilt until you calibrate again.

When calibration is complete, the **Calibrated** card shows a green checkmark. If the vehicle moved during calibration, the app will report it. Just start calibration again.

![Calibration section with Calibrated status and Start Calibration and Clear Calibration buttons, numbered 1 and 2](https://university.revotion.app/api/public/university/image/images/0fd95729-ded2-4719-a13b-67a390b1a0a7/nivellierung-04-kalibrierung-v1.png)

*Start calibration ① or clear it ②.*

## Step 5: Read tilt in degrees

After calibration, the measured values appear at the top of the dialog.

- ① **Measured tilt:** "Lengthwise · X-axis" is the tilt from front to back, "Sideways · Y-axis" is from left to right. Below that is the assessment, in the example "Slight tilt."
- ② **Height compensation:** As long as track width and wheelbase are missing, only a note appears here to enter them in the vehicle data. A centimeter value only appears once you have these measurements.

The app deliberately doesn't make a recommendation here. Without your vehicle's measurements, any centimeter value would be a guess.

![Tilt Angle dialog with 1.3 degrees lengthwise and 2.2 degrees sideways, assessment Slight tilt, below it the note to enter track width and wheelbase, numbered 1 and 2](https://university.revotion.app/api/public/university/image/images/0fd95729-ded2-4719-a13b-67a390b1a0a7/nivellierung-05-grad-v1.png)

*Tilt in degrees ①, the compensation is waiting for the measurements ②.*

## Step 6: Measure track width and wheelbase

For the compensation, what matters is where your vehicle stands, not how large the body is. So measure at the chassis:

- **Track width:** the distance between the two wheels of an axle, from tire center to tire center. This is not the width of the body.
- **Wheelbase:** the distance from the center of the front axle to the center of the rear axle. This is not the length of the vehicle.
- You can usually find both values in the vehicle manufacturer's technical data as well.

![Sketch of a vehicle from above: track width from tire center to tire center and wheelbase from axle center to axle center, compared to the length and width of the body](https://university.revotion.app/api/public/university/image/images/0fd95729-ded2-4719-a13b-67a390b1a0a7/nivellierung-masse-skizze-v1.png)

*Track width and wheelbase are smaller than the width and length of the body.*

The difference is significant: using the body's width and length, the compensation would be about a quarter higher sideways and almost twice as high lengthwise.

## Step 7: Enter measurements

Open the sidebar menu and tap the image under "My Vehicle." "Enter Vehicle Data" opens.

Under "Dimensions," first enter length and width if they're missing. Then scroll to the **Leveling** section.

- ① **Track width:** in meters, in the example 1.81.
- ② **Wheelbase:** in meters, in the example 4.04.
- ③ **Wheelbase reference:** "axle ↔ axle" for motorhomes and van conversions, "axle ↔ support wheel" for caravans. This determines which instruction the app will give you later.

Scroll all the way down and tap **Save**.

Track width cannot be greater than width, and wheelbase cannot be greater than length. If you enter more, the app will set the value to this limit and notify you.

![Vehicle data with the leveling section: track width 1.81 meters, wheelbase 4.04 meters and axle to axle reference, numbered 1 to 3](https://university.revotion.app/api/public/university/image/images/0fd95729-ded2-4719-a13b-67a390b1a0a7/nivellierung-06-masse-v1.png)

*Track width ①, wheelbase ② and reference ③.*

## Step 8: Add tile to home screen

Open the side menu and tap **Add widget**, then **Instruments**.

Scroll to the tiles titled "Tilt angle" and tap the one you want. It will appear on your home screen immediately.

There are five variants: one large with both axes and rating, one wide, one tall, and two small ones that show only longitudinal or only lateral tilt.

Close the selection afterwards using the arrow and X at the top left.

![Instruments selection, the large tilt angle tile is highlighted](https://university.revotion.app/api/public/university/image/images/0fd95729-ded2-4719-a13b-67a390b1a0a7/nivellierung-07-kachel-v1.png)

*The large "Tilt angle" tile in the selection.*

## Step 9: Read the compensation

The tile displays the tilt continuously. With the measurements from step 7, the compensation in centimeters now appears below each angle.

- ① **Rating:** "Vehicle level", "Slight tilt" or "Strong tilt".
- ② **Longitudinal:** the angle, the direction ("rear high" or "front high") and the compensation, in the example 9 cm.
- ③ **Lateral:** the angle, the direction ("right low" or "left low") and the compensation, in the example 7 cm.

The number is the height difference between the two support points. The lower side must be raised by this amount.

![Home screen with the tilt angle tile: Slight tilt, longitudinal 1.3 degrees rear high 9 centimeters, lateral 2.2 degrees right low 7 centimeters, numbered 1 to 3](https://university.revotion.app/api/public/university/image/images/0fd95729-ded2-4719-a13b-67a390b1a0a7/nivellierung-08-homescreen-v1.png)

*Rating ①, longitudinal axis ② and lateral axis ③.*

## Step 10: Place wedges and ramps

Where exactly you need to place shims is shown in the dialog. To do this, open **Configuration** and **Tilt angle** again. The tile on the home screen does not open it.

- ① **Longitudinal:** "Ramp front axle" or "Ramp rear axle". For caravans it says "Raise support wheel" or "Lower support wheel".
- ② **Lateral:** "Wedges under right" or "Wedges under left".
- ③ **Dual axle:** Place wedges under both wheels on that side. If only one wheel is ramped, the body will only lift about half as much.

In the example, this means: ramp the front axle by 9 cm and place shims under the right side by 7 cm.

![Tilt angle dialog with the height compensation section: longitudinal ramp front axle 9 centimeters, lateral wedges under right 7 centimeters and the note on dual axles, numbered 1 to 3](https://university.revotion.app/api/public/university/image/images/0fd95729-ded2-4719-a13b-67a390b1a0a7/nivellierung-09-ausgleich-v1.png)

*Instruction longitudinal ①, lateral ② and the note on dual axles ③.*

## Step 11: Check the result

Drive onto the wedges or ramps and look at the tile again. The values follow the vehicle's movement.

When the vehicle is level, the tile shows **Vehicle level**, and the compensation is at 0 cm.

Anything under 1.5° is considered level. If a small remainder remains, you can usually leave it as is.

![Home screen with the tilt angle tile: Vehicle level, longitudinal 0.0 degrees and lateral 0.1 degrees, compensation 0 centimeters each](https://university.revotion.app/api/public/university/image/images/0fd95729-ded2-4719-a13b-67a390b1a0a7/nivellierung-10-eben-v1.png)

*Done: "Vehicle level".*

## Reading the display

- **Under 1.5°:** "Vehicle level". The line under the vehicle is turquoise.
- **1.5° to 2.9°:** "Slight tilt". Number and line turn yellow.
- **From 3°:** "Strong tilt". Number and line turn red.
- For the rating, the stronger of the two axes counts. The centimeter number always takes the color of its angle.
- Up to 0.2° the tile does not show a direction. This prevents the text from jumping back and forth with the slightest movements.
- The drawing tilts somewhat more than the actual vehicle so you can see even small angles. The numbers next to it are the actual values.
- If a dash appears instead of a number, the BRAIN is not calibrated or no measurements are currently available.

## How the app calculates

- **Lateral:** Track width times sine of lateral tilt.
- **Longitudinal:** Wheelbase times sine of longitudinal tilt.
- **Rule of thumb:** One degree of tilt corresponds to roughly 1.7 cm per meter of track width or wheelbase.
- The app rounds to whole centimeters.

| Specification | Value |
|---|---|
| lateral: 1.81 m track width at 2.2° | 7 cm |
| longitudinal: 4.04 m wheelbase at 1.3° | 9 cm |

## Caravans and dual axles

- **Caravan:** Select "axle ↔ support wheel" as the reference and enter the distance from the axle to the support wheel as the wheelbase. The app will then tell you whether to raise or lower the support wheel.
- **Dual axle:** Measure the wheelbase to the midpoint between the two axles, not to the rear one. For lateral compensation, place wedges under both wheels on that side.
- **No reference selected:** The app remains neutral and writes "raise front" or "raise rear".

## Good to know

- Inclination is only available via Bluetooth. If you're connected via REMOTE, the tile shows "Not available in REMOTE".
- If you need both directions, the values add up on the wheel that sits lower in both. In the example: front right 9 + 7 = 16 cm, front left 9 cm, rear right 7 cm.
- If only one of the two measurements is missing, the app still shows the compensation for the other direction.
- If the "Leveling" section is missing from the vehicle data, the BRAIN firmware is too old or "Boat" is selected as the vehicle type.
- Calibration belongs to the installation position. If you move the BRAIN, select the new position and calibrate again.
- Where the BRAIN sits in the vehicle doesn't matter for the calculation. Only how it's oriented counts.
- If the app reports "Calibration won't survive a restart", the zero position only applies until the next BRAIN restart. Calibrate again when you get a chance.
- The info icon in the top right of the dialog starts a tour that explains each area.
- Inclination can also be used as a condition, for example for a warning in case of strong tilt. How to do this is explained in the article [Set up automations](https://university.revotion.app/artikel/id/qfg44vkd).
